A series of workshops presenting the skills needed to operate a successful design business.

Half-day workshops



Job costing workshop
This session will help all designers work out the real cost of running a business and how to create a job costing system.

Mind the gap
This workshop shows how to improve profitability by closing the gap between client expectations and your delivery. Suitable for graphic, industrial, interior, packaging, product and web designers.

Designing demand
Practical advice on how to examine your current client base and expand it to capture new business. Suitable for graphic, industrial, interior, packaging, product and web designers.

Presentation skills
Two workshops designed to cater for all levels of graphic designers, from those with basic experience through to seasoned performers.

Writing for the web
Web surfers don’t want to read, instead they scan pages and flick from one to another. This session demonstrates how to write better web content. Suitable for graphic and web designers.

Proofreading for designers
Don’t let your design down with sloppy checking. Participants learn and apply standard proofreading marks. Discussion includes the production process and terminology, how to check design and prepress proofs, and general proofreading hints.

Membership

of the dbc is free and open to all participants in the design loop.





Full-day workshops



Fiscal fitness
A detailed look at how to assess the financial fitness of a design business. Suitable for graphic, industrial, interior, packaging, product and web designers.

Inks ain’t just inks
Two 3-hour workshops for graphic designers.
The first session introduces inks; the what, the how and the why. Participants are invited to submit a design which makes creative use of inks.
The second session is at the press where the chosen piece is printed.


Short courses



Roundtable workshops
Three 2-hour workshops give participants the opportunity to discuss studio management issues. Participants get feedback from their peers and advice from an experienced facilitator. Suitable for graphic, industrial, interior, packaging, product and web designers.

Print production management
Four 2-hour workshops help graphic designers understand the production process from paper choice to binding and finishing.

Web production management
Four 2-hour workshops take graphic designers through the process of designing and developing a website.
