There are four half day workshops followed by four Roundtable workshops of two hours each.

Workshop details

    Workshop 1: Terms of Business

    This workshop covers:

    •   defining your mission, vision and values
    •   setting personal and business goals
    •   identifying your strengths, weaknesses and opportunities
    •   identifying your markets
    •   setting strategies to achieve your goals
    •   analysis of typical costs in a studio
    •   managing and reducing studio costs
    •   measuring and increasing productivity
    •   analysis of a P+L to determine studio running costs
    •   converting analysis into an hourly rate.

    Workshop 2: Design from the client perspective

    This workshop covers:

    •   what the research tells us about the practice of design in Australia
    •   profitability of Australian design studios
    •   how design studios cost out their work
    •   how design studios add value for their clients
    •   what clients expect from credentials and creative pitches
    •   how to build a successful client relationship
    •   introducing design thinking to clients
    •   gaining a brief from a client.

    Workshop 3: The marketing of a design consultancy

    This workshop covers:

    •   an analysis of your current skills and markets
    •   identifying the potential to expand your markets
    •   strategies to grow your business in existing markets
    •   competitor analysis
    •   identification of your competitive edge
    •   an action plan to gain more business.

    Workshop 4: A business case for design

    This workshop covers:

    •   what the research tells us about Design-in-Business strategy
    •   doing a client needs-analysis
    •   design cost-benefit-analysis
    •   developing a Design-in-Business strategy for an SME
    •   identifying a return on design investment
    •   design effectiveness measurement systems.
